Achilleas Samaras

Associate Professor of Maritime Hydraulics, Coastal & Harbour Engineering

I am Associate Professor at the Department of Civil Engineering in Democritus University of Thrace. My research interests focus on harbour, coastal and ocean engineering, including a particular interest in the dynamics of watershed–coast systems.

Born in Thessaloniki in 1982, I hold a PhD in Civil Engineering from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, where I also earned my Diploma and MSc – both with “Honours” and as Valedictorian.

I currently serve as Director of the Laboratory of Coastal & Harbour Works, Director of the MSc Programme “Hydrometeorological Disasters Management”, and Coordinating Author for the UN World Ocean Assessment III.

Prior to my current appointment, I was a Research Fellow at the University of Bologna and have served as an Adjunct Lecturer at the University of the Aegean.

The Third World Ocean Assessment was launched on World Oceans Day, June 8th, 2026.

Coordinating Author for Section 5B, Chapter 4: “Ocean Hazards of Natural Origin” of the UN’s Third World Ocean Assessment (WOA III), prepared under the Regular Process of the United Nations Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea (DOALOS).
