Watershed-Coast Systems •• watershed management •• morphology •• shoreline evolution model
Abstract
This work studies the impact of the hydroelectric dams’ construction in the watershed of River Nestos (N. Greece) on the morphology of its estuary, due to the caused decrease in riverine sediment discharge and the consequent disturbance of the coastal sediment budget. Coastal morphology evolution was studied using the shoreline evolution model “PELNCON”, using as input: field characteristics, wave characteristics at the breaker line and a “source” term for the introduction of the sediment discharge of Nestos. The latter was estimated based on field measurements and calibrated model results at various locations along the Greek part of the river (viz. Nestos is a transboundary river extending to both Greece and Bulgaria). “PELNCON” results denoted the severe threat for the protected area of Nestos estuary due to erosive phenomena, as the annual deficit of the coastal sediment budget was estimated to reach 1.8×10^6 m^3/year.
